After kids complained that their superintendent in a New York school district crowd surfed on them and smelled of alcohol during a Friday homecoming game, the superintendent was placed on administrative leave.

Jason Thomson, the superintendent of the Baldwinsville Central School District, was detained on Friday after pupils informed the school resource officer (SRO) that he “smelled of alcohol,” according to a press release from the Baldwinsville Police Department. Having failed both a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer, Thompson, who was hired in 2021, was detained on his way home.

“The superintendent was crowd surfing amongst students in the student section of the bleachers. Several students came forward to school officials and reported that the superintendent smelled of alcohol,” Baldwinsville Police Department Chief Michael W. Lefancheck said during the conference.

According to the conference, Thompson informed police that he had “just had one beer” when he was stopped over. Thompson’s blood alcohol level (BAC) at the time of his arrest was 0.15 percent, over double the legal limit for drivers.

The Board of Education of the Baldwinsville Central School District made the announcement that Thompson will be put on leave starting on Monday.

“We share with the community’s concern over the decisions made by Superintendent of Schools Jason Thomson on Friday evening. His actions placed the student body and community at risk. The District continues to work with the Baldwinsville Police Department and is also investigating the events of the evening. While the investigations are ongoing, no further comments by the school district will be made,” the announcement said.

School district acting superintendent Joseph DeBarbieri will take over “immediately.” The board stated, “The Board supports Mr. DeBarbieri as he works with students, staff, and the community during this difficult time.”

According to Athlos Executive Director Cheryl Martin, Mixon had worked at the Terrytown charter school for three years.

“Once notified of the allegation, we immediately notified local authorities and placed [Mixon] on leave,” Martin said.

She claimed that after the school launched an internal investigation, Mixon was fired.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Mixon was employed as a social-emotional learning specialist at the school, which educates children from kindergarten through eighth grade, at the time of the alleged event. Mixon is listed as a third-grade teacher on the school’s website.

On November 3, a 14-year-old kid complained to a school administrator that Mixon had tried to kiss and tickle him without his consent. As soon as the school called the sheriff’s office, detectives got to work.

Mixon was taken into custody at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center after investigators with the sheriff’s office obtained a warrant for his arrest. On a $10,000 bond, he was let out of the Gretna jail on Tuesday.

Martin claims that prior to the alleged incident on November 3, Athlos Academy had not received any prior complaints against Mixon.

Charles Kirkland, Homer-Center high school business teacher arrested for possession of child pornography

A teacher from the Homer-Center School District has been accused with having child pornography and is currently free on bond.

Charles Allen Kirkland, 31, of Derry Township, was charged on Monday with two counts of child pornography, sharing movies, and using a communication device for unlawful purposes. All three offenses are felonies.

Between July 16 and August 4, five CyberTipline reports from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted Pennsylvania State Police to nine videos. The information was provided by Google, which found the movies in a Google Drive reportedly used by Kirkland.

Some of the movies featured children, which PSP Computer Crime Unit troopers were able to ascertain.

On September 7, after collecting an IP address, the PSP served Comcast with an administrative subpoena demanding the subscriber’s data. Comcast replied on December 7, and on December 9 the police got a search warrant for the Blairsville residence.

Kirkland was discovered napping in a back bedroom by troopers executing the search warrant from the Computer Crimes Task Force and Kiski Valley barracks on December 11. Kirkland allegedly admitted to watching the movies on several electronic devices when being questioned by authorities.

Since 2016, Kirkland has worked for the Homer-Center School District as a business instructor.

According to DASD Superintendent Greg Ferencak, Kirkland, a 2010 alumnus of Derry Area High School, also served as a substitute teacher at DASD during the 2015–16 academic year. Kirkland had the relevant clearances while working at DASD, according to Ferencak.

Kirkland also served as a student teacher at Greater Latrobe School District in 2015, according to a profile page on the website of the Homer-Center School District.

Kirkland is due to show up for a preliminary hearing on December 21 before Magisterial District Judge Kelly Tua Hammers.
