A 16-year-old boy who later wrote a college application essay on the alleged sexual assault is being charged in Broward County Court by a teacher who has taught in schools in Miami-Dade and Broward and has won a presidential award, according to police.

Carlos Montero, 46, was detained by Fort Lauderdale police on October 3, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office corrections records. According to investigators, the case began in Connecticut as a result of a school counselor’s allegation. According to investigators, Montero turned himself into FLPD after seeing the evidence.

The Connecticut young boy was allegedly met for sex by Montero, who was born in Texas but now resides in Fort Lauderdale, via Tinder, and they continued their conversation about sex on Snapchat.

According to the arrest report, the teenager traveled to Miami-Dade County with his mother in April 2021 to visit a relative in Golden Beach. Although he claimed to be an 18-year-old on Tinder, the teen eventually admitted to Montero that he was actually a minor.

The child allegedly told his friends about the encounter, and when he began to feel “depressed” about it, he told Montero. Montero allegedly assured the teen that the sexual experience was “consensual” and warned him that he “might get in trouble and lose his job” if he revealed it.

In 2015, NSU University School in Davie identified Montero as a teacher in honors and AP chemistry for students in grades 9-12 and praised him for being among the 108 mathematics and science teachers nationwide who former President Barack Obama honored with the presidential award for excellence.

In 2018, Scheck Hillel Community School in North Miami Beach announced trusting Montero, as a “nationally-recognized science educator” to teach students in grades 6-12 as the Science Department Chair and physics teacher after leaving NSU University School where he also served as a department chair.

According to the arrest report, detectives have proof of the teenage boy and Montero’s correspondence.

According to court documents, Montero is accused of sexually assaulting a child, using obscene communication to entice, solicit, or lure a child, purchasing or selling minor information for sex, and traveling to meet after using a computer to lure a child.

According to Athlos Executive Director Cheryl Martin, Mixon had worked at the Terrytown charter school for three years.

“Once notified of the allegation, we immediately notified local authorities and placed [Mixon] on leave,” Martin said.

She claimed that after the school launched an internal investigation, Mixon was fired.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Mixon was employed as a social-emotional learning specialist at the school, which educates children from kindergarten through eighth grade, at the time of the alleged event. Mixon is listed as a third-grade teacher on the school’s website.

On November 3, a 14-year-old kid complained to a school administrator that Mixon had tried to kiss and tickle him without his consent. As soon as the school called the sheriff’s office, detectives got to work.

Mixon was taken into custody at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center after investigators with the sheriff’s office obtained a warrant for his arrest. On a $10,000 bond, he was let out of the Gretna jail on Tuesday.

Martin claims that prior to the alleged incident on November 3, Athlos Academy had not received any prior complaints against Mixon.

A teacher from the Homer-Center School District has been accused with having child pornography and is currently free on bond.

Charles Allen Kirkland, 31, of Derry Township, was charged on Monday with two counts of child pornography, sharing movies, and using a communication device for unlawful purposes. All three offenses are felonies.

Between July 16 and August 4, five CyberTipline reports from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children alerted Pennsylvania State Police to nine videos. The information was provided by Google, which found the movies in a Google Drive reportedly used by Kirkland.

Some of the movies featured children, which PSP Computer Crime Unit troopers were able to ascertain.

On September 7, after collecting an IP address, the PSP served Comcast with an administrative subpoena demanding the subscriber’s data. Comcast replied on December 7, and on December 9 the police got a search warrant for the Blairsville residence.

Kirkland was discovered napping in a back bedroom by troopers executing the search warrant from the Computer Crimes Task Force and Kiski Valley barracks on December 11. Kirkland allegedly admitted to watching the movies on several electronic devices when being questioned by authorities.

Since 2016, Kirkland has worked for the Homer-Center School District as a business instructor.

According to DASD Superintendent Greg Ferencak, Kirkland, a 2010 alumnus of Derry Area High School, also served as a substitute teacher at DASD during the 2015–16 academic year. Kirkland had the relevant clearances while working at DASD, according to Ferencak.

Kirkland also served as a student teacher at Greater Latrobe School District in 2015, according to a profile page on the website of the Homer-Center School District.

Kirkland is due to show up for a preliminary hearing on December 21 before Magisterial District Judge Kelly Tua Hammers.
