FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – A former substitute teacher employed by Cumberland County Schools has been arrested and subsequently fired by the school district following disturbing allegations of engaging in sexually explicit activities with students and taking minors to a hotel without parental knowledge. La’Kisha Renee Davis, 46, was apprehended on Tuesday and is facing charges of indecent liberties with students and felonious restraint.
The news of Davis’ arrest has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students within the school district. Parents and guardians are now grappling with the unsettling reality that such misconduct can occur within the educational environment.
The alleged incidents, involving four children aged 13 and 14, reportedly took place over the span of several weeks in January and February. According to court documents, Davis, who had been working as a substitute teacher and volunteer pep squad coach at New Century International Middle School, allegedly exploited her position of authority and trust to solicit explicit content from the students.
One of the victims came forward with the disturbing revelation that Davis had requested a video of the child kissing her boyfriend. Shockingly, after the student complied and sent the video, Davis allegedly provided feedback on the kissing technique, offering inappropriate advice. Another student allegedly faced a similar ordeal, being coerced into simulating oral sex on an ice cube while Davis watched.
Furthermore, the arrest warrant reveals deeply troubling allegations of Davis taking four minors to a hotel on two separate occasions in February without the knowledge or consent of their parents. The warrant suggests that Davis manipulated and deceived the victims, instructing them to lie about their whereabouts and activities during their stays at the hotel.
The news of Davis’ arrest has sent shockwaves through the Cumberland County School District. School officials have expressed their deep concern for the well-being of the affected students and their families. Cumberland County Schools spokesperson Lindsay Whitley emphasized that the district takes these allegations extremely seriously and prioritizes the safety and protection of its students.
As soon as the allegations came to light, the school district took immediate action. Davis was placed on administrative leave in February and subsequently terminated from her position on March 6. The school district promptly reported the allegations to the authorities, enabling law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation.
Following her arrest at her residence on Tuesday morning, Davis was taken into custody and booked into the Cumberland County jail. The court has set her bail at $75,000 secured, reflecting the serious nature of the charges she is facing.
Parents and guardians within the Cumberland County community are now grappling with a range of emotions, from shock and anger to concern for the well-being of their children. The school district, in collaboration with law enforcement, has vowed to provide support to the affected families and offer any necessary resources to help them navigate this challenging time.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation into the allegations against Davis. They are urging anyone with additional information or who may have been affected by her actions to come forward and assist in the investigation.
As the community comes to terms with this distressing incident, there is a renewed call for enhanced vigilance and stricter protocols to ensure the safety and security of students in schools. Parents and educators are joining forces to demand comprehensive measures that protect children from potential harm and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
The Cumberland County School District remains committed to its mission of providing a safe and nurturing learning environment for all students. They are working diligently to restore trust and reassure parents that the well-being of their children is their utmost priority. The district will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities as the investigation progresses, with a steadfast commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.
