Jane Shetterly, De Anza High School Art Teacher charged with 12 felonies for allegedly sexually abusing female student

A former teacher from the West Contra Costa Unified School District has been detained and accused of assaulting a kid in 2021.

Jane Shetterly, 42, of Martinez, was charged with 12 felonies, including eight charges of alleged specified sexual acts on a kid and three counts of lewd acts on children. She was also charged with one count of making improper contact with a minor. According to court documents, Shetterly entered a not guilty plea during her arraignment before Judge Rebecca Hardie on July 11.

After the mother of the alleged victim informed police that she had discovered proof her daughter was being molested by a teacher, Shetterly was detained last year. According to the police, Shetterly assaulted the girl, a student with special needs, while giving her private lessons at Shetterly’s house.

According to court records, Shetterly handed herself in over two weeks after the accusations were brought on June 30. In lieu of her $1.1 million bail, she is still being held in Contra Costa County jail.

The claimed victim filed a federal lawsuit against the school district, claiming administrators failed to safeguard her when complaints of inappropriate behavior emerged and disregarded indicators that Shetterly was a predator. Civil lawyer Micha Star Liberty brought the lawsuit, calling the allegations “the beginning steps to attaining accountability and would hopefully hasten healing from this awful ordeal for my client.”

Several law enforcement sources claim that Shetterly was fired from the district following her arrest the previous year.

According to court documents, Shetterly first met the girl while she was a freshman, and their friendship gradually turned into sexual abuse. The child claimed that Shetterly kissed her more than 100 times, that Shetterly sent her “love letters,” and that the sexual abuse occurred, among other places, at both the girl’s home and Shetterly’s house.

The evidence indicated that there were sexually explicit images on an electronic device, although police have not specified what they showed. According to court records, the mother of the accused victim told investigators that she had found photos and videos of some of the sexual assault that had occurred when she first reported the offenses.

According to court documents, police claim that Shetterly escorted the girl to sex stores and purchased alcohol for her. Additionally, they claim that Shetterly instructed the child to fabricate allegations of parental abuse in order to get the girl’s adoption and “scripted” communications to that effect for the girl to submit to authorities.
