David Hoelewyn, a science teacher at Texans Can Academy, was arrested on Monday by the Dallas Independent School District Police Department for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student. Hoelewyn began his position as a science teacher at the school in 2021. The student reportedly told the school’s principal that Hoelewyn began messaging her in January 2023 through text messages and Snapchat, which eventually became physical.

An affidavit released by law enforcement stated that more than 300 Snapchat messages were retrieved between Hoelewyn and the victim. The messages were “largely sexual in nature, some of which reference David giving the victim ‘extra credit’ towards her school work for sexual favors and others that allude to David and the victim coordinating a location and time for which they can have sex with one another.”

The victim claimed she provided Hoelewyn with her phone number to be added to a group chat for a school club, but he began texting her directly shortly after. The texts allegedly became increasingly sexual over time. Hoelewyn allegedly sent the victim numerous images daily, including inappropriate photos of himself. On more than one occasion, Hoelewyn inappropriately touched the student, according to the affidavit.

The school district released a statement expressing its deep concern over the allegations and announced an internal investigation into the matter. Hoelewyn has been suspended and will not be allowed on campus pending the outcome of the investigation.

Hoelewyn has been charged with sexual assault of a child and is being held at the Dallas County Jail on a $100,000 bond. The affidavit further revealed that some messages referenced the victim’s age and did not begin legally. It is unclear whether Hoelewyn has retained an attorney.
