Will Reynolds, the prosecutor for Atlantic County, New Jersey, has confirmed that an Atlantic City High School teacher since 2009 was detained on his way to work on September 30, 2022.
In particular, Reynolds said, “The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit investigated an inappropriate contact between a former student at the Atlantic City High School and a teacher at the school during the month of September 2022. The teacher, later identified as Joseph A. Scalfaro, 47, of Absecon, was charged after the inquiry with second-degree official misconduct, fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, and endangering the welfare of a child in the second degree.
The victim admitted to having a relationship with Scalfaro when she was a student and 17 years old, which included their attendance at a motel in Galloway Township in March.
The affidavit of probable cause states that during discussions between them that were taped, Scalfaro admitted to having a sexual relationship with the victim. Along with it, he denied having had any sexual interactions with any other pupils.
Additionally, the victim and Scalfaro had an inappropriate interaction that occurred both on and off the grounds of the school, according to the prosecution.
Scalfaro “was taken into arrest in Atlantic City and was transferred to the Atlantic County Justice Facility,” according to Reynolds.
Reynolds states that the probe is still ongoing.
Details in the affidavit:
On Sept. 20, the teen told police she and Scalfaro kissed in his classroom on multiple occasions while she was a student and he was a teacher, the affidavit states.
“He told her he was so attracted to her he would leave class to go to the bathroom to masturbate,” she told the investigator, according to the affidavit.
She also said Scalfaro would pick her up at her home and they would kiss in his vehicle. Other times, she would also drive to a park in Absecon where they would meet and kiss.
Records show Scalfaro checked in to the Quality Inn in Galloway Township on March 8. The teen told the police that she was there with him.
While there, “they kissed, he took her shirt off and he masturbated in front of her,” the affidavit states.
He is accused of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor. He also faces a second-degree official misconduct charge from May 1.
