Deputies from the Thermal Station responded to the 86100 block of Avenue 66 in Thermal at 10:17 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2022, in response to allegations of a teacher who was drunk on the grounds of a nearby school. When one of their professors looked to be under the influence of alcohol, school officials called the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
According to the investigation, Brian Nichols, a 44-year-old teacher at the school who lives in Palm Springs, was intoxicated when he was instructing the students. Nichols was taken into custody and lodged at the John Benoit Detention Center on suspicion of child endangerment, public intoxication, and possession of alcohol on school property.
According to jail records, Brian Nichols secured $35,000 bond and was freed from the John J. Benoit Detention Center the same day. On December 7, he is expected to be arraigned in the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
