According to court records, Janice Maw, a teacher at a Chesapeake elementary school, was detained on August 30 on allegations of misdemeanor battery and assault on two juveniles.

A mom from Chesapeake named Elizabeth Leemon claimed she reported Maw for abuse of her daughter Christina Moore, 11, on June 23, 2022, while the two were enrolled at Grassfield Elementary School.

Allegations originally came to light in June, according to Leemon, after one of the assistants at Grassfield Elementary School told her she had witnessed the abuse personally.

Two of Christina’s classmates, according to other parents, were allegedly similarly mistreated by Maw.

Leemon and one additional parent complained about the special education teacher. Yolanda Myrick, a third parent, also intends to file charges.

In May, around the time of the alleged assault, Christina’s mother claimed she began observing changes in her daughter’s conduct.

When she returned home, “she would cry a lot,” Leemon recalled. She always desired my presence. I was never supposed to be out of her sight. She was fidgety. She was experiencing nighttime nightmares.

Police did not prosecute Maw with assault and violence until months later, on Tuesday, when they also detained her at the school.

The Elizabeth City-based teacher’s return to Chesapeake was required, according to the police, before they could proceed with the arrest.

Leemon exclaimed, “I feel relieved. I believe that there is a chance for justice now.

The instructor has once more been placed on administrative leave by Chesapeake Public Schools.

The school system and Child Protective Services initiated its own investigations as soon as concerns first appeared in May.

Leemon thinks the investigation was handled improperly by the school and CPS.

I’m upset,” she declared. Because these children are mute, I believe that justice has once again been denied to them.

Maw is currently free on bail and will appear in court on September 7 at 9 a.m. for her arraignment.
