After several allegations of sexual misconduct were made by students toward the end of last year, a physical education instructor at Summit Middle School (SMS) is now facing criminal charges.

The claims of sexual misconduct by a teacher against female pupils were reported to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) by the Summit School District on October 27, 2021.

The instructor was identified by the district as Leonard Alan Grams, a 61-year-old SMS physical education and project initiative teacher.

After conducting its own investigation, the district reported that between September 30 and October 24, 2021, school district officials were made aware of several allegations of Grams’ alleged sexual misconduct. Female students who were involved in those reports said that Grams had inappropriate and illegal sexual contact with the victims while the class was in session.

Search warrants were served on the school district during the sheriff’s office inquiry, and hundreds of pages of documents and interviews gleaned from the district probe were unearthed.

Additionally, detectives spoke with Grams, the victims’ parents, district officials, and the victims themselves.

The morning of August 9th, Grams turned himself in at the SCSO Detention Facility.

When pressed for more facts, the Summit School District said that they were “unable to comment” on any specifics.
