A former Waters elementary school in Lincoln Square teacher who admitted to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old student and having child pornography in his possession on Thursday afternoon was given a 16-year prison sentence by the judge.

In 2019, prosecutors filed felony charges against former Waters Elementary teacher Jason Gil, 42, for abusing a youngster sexually while in a position of trust.

According to the prosecution, Gil sexually abused the former pupil at least twice and texted her about the attacks. They also claimed that he possessed 25 images of the youngster in their underwear on his phone.

From 2017 through 2019, the former teacher is said to have sexually assaulted the student. Over the course of those two years, Gil allegedly kissed the student in a classroom, requested her to send him images of herself in her underwear, and engaged in “sexual conduct” with the girl in his car and at her house when her parents weren’t around, according to the prosecution.

Parents have begged prosecutors not to make a deal or be lenient after their child’s incarceration. Kim Foxx, state’s attorney for Cook County, was urged to “prosecute this crime to the greatest extent of the law.”

Since 2020, Gil has been free but under electronic surveillance. Gil apologized and acknowledged guilt on Thursday while in front of Skokie court judge Anjana M.J. Hansen.

“I’d like to say, I’m sorry for everything that has occurred,” Gil said.

In two charges of criminal sexual assault and two counts of soliciting child pornography, he entered a guilty plea. According to the prosecution, the convictions result in a total sentence of 16 years. According to officials, he will be given credit for three and a half years of service served.

Adam Sheppard, one of Gil’s attorneys, estimated that he could be released in six years, which infuriated Gil’s parents.

“A judge gave him a 16-year term. Many of those hours will be completed at a 50 percent rate when good time credit is taken into account. Therefore, he will probably serve another six years or more in prison, Sheppard said outside the courthouse.

Gill will have to register as a sex offender.
