The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office reported Monday that a Redlands middle school teacher has been accused of sodomizing a male student during a five-year period but has been free on bail pending his August arraignment.

According to the D.A.’s office, Joseph Michael Nardella, 53, of Highland was detained on Friday but released after posting a $500,000 bond.

Two counts of sodomy of a kid under the age of 16, two counts of sodomy of a minor under the age of 18, and one act of ongoing sexual abuse are all felonies against Nardella.

According to the D.A.’s office, Nardella had “a continuous sexual relationship with a pupil for nearly five years, from 2015–2021.” According to the news source, Nardella was a teacher in the eighth grade at Clement Middle School in Redlands at the time.

Prosecutors claim that Nardella committed “three and more acts of serious sexual conduct,…, and three and more lewd and lascivious acts,” against “a minor under the age of 14 years,” as part of the continuous sexual assault charge. The allegation states that Nardella shared a home with the youngster and “had frequent access” to him.

The victim’s link to Nardella was not made explicit by the prosecution.

The court rejected a request by the D.A.’s office to have Nardella’s bail increased. He is scheduled to be arraigned on August 10 at San Bernardino County Superior Court.
