According to the sheriff’s office, an ex-teacher in Harnett County was arrested on Wednesday for indecent liberties with a student.
The inquiry began when a complaint was filed against Shawn C. Hicks, 27, by the parents of a Harnett Central Middle School student. According to a news statement from the sheriff’s office, three students were revealed to be victims of his.
According to deputies, all of the instances occurred outside of the school.
Hicks was charged with three charges of indecent liberties with a student, despite the fact that he is no longer employed by the school district. He was remanded in custody after posting a $50,000 bond.
Hicks taught science at Harnett Central Middle School from December 2016 to February 25, 2022, according to the district.
“While we cannot comment on specific personnel issues, Harnett County Schools has high expectations for the professionalism and conduct of its staff. HCS takes any concerns about staff conduct very seriously, and swiftly investigates and takes appropriate action when concerns are raised. The safety of our children is always our top priority,” a spokeswoman for the district said.
Hicks was nominated Beginning Teacher of the Year for a program he established at the school to assist young men who lacked father figures.
The sheriff’s office stated the investigation began on Feb. 26 and that warrants for Hicks’ arrest were issued around April 1.
Hicks utilized his position as a teacher to entice children to his home, but he also used his position as a minister at a Bunn church to find new victims.
The cause of the probe was not disclosed by the authorities.
For the charges, Hicks turned himself in and was given a $50,000 bond. Jail records show Hicks has been released.
