Miguel Bonano, East Wake Academy middle-school teacher arrested and charged with sex crimes of a student

According to Zebulon Police, a longtime Zebulon teacher has been arrested following an investigation into a complaint.

Miguel Bonano, 64, of Raleigh, is accused of indecent liberties with a student. A maximum penalty of 24 months is imposed on the first charge. The maximum penalty for the second charge is 59 months. He is being jailed on a $25,000 bond at the Wake County Jail.

Bonano was arraigned on Thursday, and the judge stated that he cannot be in the presence of a juvenile without supervision, have any contact with any alleged victim, or go to any alleged victim’s home, school, company, or place of employment.

Officers began investigating when a student complained about Bonano, a teacher at East Wake Academy, on May 25.

Bonano has worked at East Wake Academy since 2003 and says the school has completely cooperated with the investigation.

According to Stephen Gay, the superintendent of East Wake Academy, Bonano, a middle-school teacher, is no longer employed by the school.

“The school has and will continue cooperating with law enforcement on the continuing investigation,” Gay said in an email. “This is a personnel matter, and we cannot comment further at this time.”
