A Hawaii instructor has been charged with child pornography dissemination. Alden Bunag acknowledged to having sex with a 13-year-old male student and transferred unlawful images and video to another teacher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, according to federal authorities.

Bunag appeared in federal court for the first time on Thursday and is being held in custody until his next hearing. According to court documents, he revealed to investigators that he videotaped his sexual meetings with a 13-year-old former student and shared the films with others using a chat app.

Bunag had been delivering child pornography to a Philadelphia instructor, according to federal prosecution records. In October, that teacher was arrested.

Bunag and the mainland teacher allegedly exchanged over 33 hundred texts, including hundreds of photos and video files, according to documents.

“Bunag claimed to have intercourse with (the youngster) at the school during lunch breaks,” according to the documents. “Knew he was a minor at the time and described him as a previous student.”

“He also acknowledged to releasing the video recording of his sexual interaction… agreed to transmitting child pornography involving other underage victims,” according to court records.

“The way the suspect confessed to the crimes is telling. That only goes to demonstrate how people who commit these kind of crimes often believe they can get away with it,” said Doug Chin, a former state attorney general.

Bunag also does not appear to have a criminal background, which Chin claims is common of child pornography suspects.

“They often have no previous contact with a law enforcement system, and that shock often leads to a fairly swift confession, which appears to be what happened here,” Chin said.

He emphasizes the need of many agencies around the country cooperating with one another, particularly when dealing with persons accused of such a horrible crime.

“In order to be able to crack down on some of the most terrifying and horrible people in our community,” he continued, referring to people who prey on children for sexual gain.

Bunag’s detention hearing is scheduled for June 21.
