Former West Ottawa Public Schools substitute teacher Jill Edstrom was sentenced to 18 months in a Michigan jail for sexually assaulting a high school student in a Grand Haven courtroom on Monday.
Last year, Edstrom, 51, of Park Township, sexually abused a 16-year-old student while working as a long-term substitute teacher at West Ottawa High School, particularly for special education kids.
Judge Jon Hulsing ordered Edstrom to serve at least 18 months and up to 15 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections at a sentencing hearing on Monday. When Edstrom is released from prison, she will be required to register as a sex offender.
According to an investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Edstrom and the student had a close relationship for months, with Edstrom frequently giving the student rides home from school.
At Edstrom’s home in Park Township, Edstrom had “gotten drunk one night and had come on to him and started having sex with him and he didn’t know what to do,” the student said, according to the police report.
