According to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Jonathan Howell, 40, of Marmora, was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, official misconduct, and endangering the welfare of a child.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Howell works as a teacher for the Pleasantville School District. On Thursday, no one from the school could be reached for comment.
According to authorities, the inquiry began in April 2021 when the office received notification of a social media post that contained various charges against the Ocean City Beach Patrol.
The allegations, which were shared on the Instagram account ocbp predators, included claims of widespread sexual assault by older beach patrol members against younger members. There are stories of sexual abuse against underage girls in the posts along with heavy drug and alcohol use.
“Since that time the prosecutor’s office has conducted a thorough investigation into these allegations and these charges and the execution of this search warrant are the results of this investigation,” the office said in its statement.
In the summer of 2017, investigators allege that Howell provided alcohol to a 16-year-old female and later sexually assaulted her. At the time, Howell was a senior guard who supervised the victim, the affidavit stated.
