A former Everglades High School teacher has been charged with having an improper relationship with a student.
Carlos Alberto Menendez, 48, has been charged with five counts of sexual battery on a juvenile by the Miramar Police Department. On Friday, he was detained and taken into custody by Sunrise Police.
Menendez has not worked for the school district in several years, according to authorities, but was employed by the school district at the time of the alleged crimes.
Menendez departed Everglades High School to work at Cypress Hill High School in Weston, according to the arrest warrant issued by Miramar Police. He later relocated to Delaware, where he is currently employed as a teacher.
Other victims have not come forward since Menendez left Everglades High School, according to police.
According to the arrest warrant, the timeline of events began on Dec. 10, 2020, when the victim filed a delayed complaint to Miramar Police Officers.
The victim indicated in the report that she was between the ages of 15 and 17 when she was a student at Everglades High School and had been forced into an ongoing sexual connection with a school employee.
Menendez, a teacher and the athletics director at the school, was the employee known to the victim.
The first incidence occurred in 2017, during the months of February and March, according to the victim.
Menendez would drop her off at a friend’s house in Miramar.
Menedez would then pull over to the side of the road and would engage in sexual activity with the victim.
There were a total of five times that Menendez committed sexual acts with the victim until October.
The woman had three pregnancy scares throughout their sexual connection, during which Menendez ordered her to take a Plan-B tablet to prevent any pregnancies.
Menendez threatened to kill himself if the victim told anyone after their sexual relationship ended because he did not want to serve 45 years in prison.
The victim felt groomed, and he was concerned that someone else may fall prey to his predatory tendencies.
When Menendez left Everglades High School after their relationship ended, the victim noticed multiple text exchanges between Menendez and a student from Cypress Hill High School.
Despite the fact that the texts were not sexually explicit, the victim believed the communication between him and the student was wrong.
