Following the assault of a special-needs student in a classroom, a teacher at Cayce Elementary School was arrested on May 25.
According to a news statement from the city, Melanie Harris is charged with second-degree assault, kidnapping, and unlawful conduct toward a juvenile in the May 20 incident.
Harris is accused of kidnapping the pupil, whose identity has been shielded since he is a juvenile.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and the Cayce Police Department have not disclosed any additional information about the incident or the student’s injuries.
Harris was suspended the same day of the incident, according to a spokeswoman for Lexington School District Two, which serves 8,600 children in Cayce and West Columbia, including Cayce Elementary.
A day before her arrest, the teacher was sacked.
Harris is being detained in custody at the Lexington County Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
