A medical doctor and former substitute teacher in the Charleston area was arrested this week, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, in connection with a 2018 sexual assault of a teenager.

The US Marshals Service apprehended Robert Dewayne Williams, 37, in Jefferson County, Alabama. He faces a charge of second-degree criminal sexual behavior with a juvenile between the ages of 11 and 14. Williams will be extradited to the county of Charleston.

When the victim reported the sexual assault in May 2018, CCSO officers began looking into the case in April 2022. Williams tutored the victim when he was 14 years old, after they met while Williams was a substitute instructor at the student’s high school.

Williams assaulted the now-18-year-old victim after they saw a movie together in a theater.

Williams worked as a substitute teacher at several elementary, middle, and high schools in Charleston and Berkeley counties from 2017 to 2018, according to detectives. At the time, he was also a medical student at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Prior to his arrest, he was employed as a pediatrics resident at a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

Anyone having information regarding Williams that may be useful to the investigation should contact the Sheriff’s Office at 843-743-7200 and ask to speak with a detective.
