According to officials, a northern Indiana teacher who was seen on camera smacking a kid in the face last week has been arrested on a preliminary allegation of violence.
Michael Hosinski, 61, of Osceola, Indiana, was brought into jail Thursday, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office stated. According to the sheriff’s office, the preliminary battery charge is a category 6 felony, and a request for formal charges has been filed.
The arrest came less than a week after Hosinski allegedly punched a student in the corridor of Jimtown High School in Elkhart on Feb. 25.
Hosinski challenged a kid about their apparel, notably a hoodie, and the verbal confrontation ended with “an open-handed smack,” according to the school’s administration, Baugo Community Schools. The student “suffered apparent injuries,” according to the school district.
Hosinski appears to have grabbed the student’s backpack before slamming them against a wall and smacking them on the face in video of the event.
The unidentified student appears to have hit their head on the wall as a result of the intensity of the impact, and then collapses to the ground seconds later.
According to the district, Hosinski is no longer employed at Baugo Community Schools, is not permitted on school grounds, and has been reported to the Indiana Department of Education.
Hosinski’s early retirement and full pension were granted by the school board.
