A Reno middle school teacher has been released on bail after being accused of sexually assaulting a kid for several years.
According to court documents, Jose Montelongo-Flores, 54, posted $40,000 cash bail on Monday, May 2.
Flores was arrested on felony charges of sexual assault with a kid under the age of 16 on April 26. News 4 and Fox 11 discovered court documents revealing years of alleged sexual assault between Flores and a Vaughn Middle School student. The abuse began in 2014, when the victim was in seventh grade, and continued until the end of June 2018, according to the victim, who is now 20 years old.
Despite the district attorney’s office pressing for a $2 million bail owing to public safety concerns, Flores’ bond was set at $400,000 on April 29.
Flores was placed under home arrest with an ankle monitor after being released from the Washoe County jail. He is not allowed to contact the victim or any other child under the age of 18 except his own.
Flores, who was most recently an orchestra instructor at Pine Middle School, was promptly placed on administrative leave after the charges and arrest were made public. Flores is also the director of the mariachi ensemble at the University of Nevada, Reno.
According to the Pine Middle School staff directory, Mr. Flores is listed as the orchestra director as of Wednesday morning.
