Highland High School teacher Kyle Brooks, 55, of West Akron, was arrested by Medina County Sheriff’s Office deputies April 21 at the high school on one charge of sexual battery — a felony of the third degree.
Brooks is accused of having sexual conduct with a 17-year-old student, with an offense date listed as April 14 on the Court’s website. During his video arraignment April 22, Brooks was assigned a bond of $200,000, $18,000 of which was paid, and then released from the Medina County Jail. A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, April 29, at 11:45 a.m. in front of Judge Gary Werner at Medina Municipal Court.
Brooks has been employed at the high school since 1994, teaching English 12, College/Career Readiness, Cinematic Literature, Creative Writing, and Speech, according to the Highland district website. He also is a former president of the Highland Education Association. Superintendent Catherine Aukerman briefly mentioned his arrest at the meeting.
“I would just like to say that the investigation is ongoing, we are cooperating with the authorities and we will not be making any comments during the course of this investigation,” she said. “I know that people are anxious to learn more and there will just be no additional comments while the investigation is ongoing.”
